Significance

Chhath is the direct worship of Surya and Chhathi Maiya: no priest, no idol, only the river, the sun and an exacting vrat. It is the signature festival of Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern UP, now celebrated wherever its people live.

The four days

Nahay Khay: purifying bath; one sattvik meal
Kharna: day-long fast ending with gur kheer after sunset; the 36-hour nirjala vrat begins
Sandhya Arghya: the great evening, when offerings are made to the setting sun at the ghat, with thekua and seasonal fruit in bamboo soop
Usha Arghya: arghya to the rising sun; the fast is broken (parana)
